Britain emerged in spectacular fashion in the 17th century and developed a world class navy that would go on to dominate the world’s oceans and colonise a quarter of the world’s population. But the rise of other powers and two world wars saw it eclipsed by the US and ever since Britain has played a weakening hand in global affairs. It remains to be seen if Britain can remain in the premier league of nations.
