Russia has been a European power for centuries and has been to war with most of the powers on the European continent. The country embraced communism in the early 20th century and would compete with the US for global domination. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 Russia went through a decade of chaos and it would take the national security establishment led by Vladmir Putin to stop the rot. Today, Russia gets lots of headlines as a competitor to the US but the Russia of today is not Soviet Union and with growing challenges both domestically and abroad can Russia remain a viable power in the world?
