The German people emerged on the European scene in spectacular fashion. Germany rapidly industrialised and Berlin’s imperatives, shaped by its permanent geopolitical challenge of inhabiting the North European Plain led it to two world wars. German defeats in both the world wars have defined the nations post war policies and with growing challenges it remains to be seen if Germany can remain in the premier league of nations.
